Foreign job bureau chief gets tough with Jordan agency

Agencies Association in Jordan has been instructed to take proper and prompt action to problems faced by Sri Lankan housemaids working there, said Foreign Employment Bureau Chairman Kingsly Ranawaka.

"The Agencies Association in Jordan was directed through the Sri Lanka Embassy in Jordan to look into the problems of Sri Lankan housemaids and find solutions immediately," he added. Ranawaka observed that the Agencies Association had given three weeks to find solutions. If they failed to act, the Foreign Employment Bureau will temporarily suspend sending housemaids to Jordan , adding that such a situation had risen due to negligence of certain agencies to take action on time.

The Foreign Employment Bureau had intervened on many occasions to find solutions to problems faced by housemaids in Jordan .

Lanka may ban maids in Jordan

The Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau has warned that it will be compelled to suspend sending maids to Jordan if recruitment agencies which hire these maids to the Middle Eastern country fail to deal with their problems.

According to the Bureau these agencies have been given a two week deadline to address the concerns of maids sent to Jordan including providing compensation for those facing abuse. (JN)
