Over 250,000 Sri Lankans engaged in foreign employment

( Colombo Lankapuvath August 10) Over 250,000 individuals leave the country in search of foreign employment annually said Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.

Adressing the media at the launch of the web site, www.slbfe.lk of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) he said that there are over 1.6 million Sri Lankan migrant workers employed in 24 countries. This working community has to be accessible to the motherland irrespective of where they are employed.

The website was setup to upgrade welfare aspects of Sri Lanka ’s migrant workers and their families, the Minister said. “The website will provide employees and prospective employers with information ranging from the basic services of the SLBFE to important contact details and some insight in to important rules and regulations that govern Sri Lanka ’s foreign employment trade,” Minister Rambukwella said.

The new measures to uplift the standard of foreign employment are conducted under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa
