Sri Lankan housemaid held for a series of thefts

DUBAI - A Sri Lankan housemaid has been arrested in connection with thefts in 12 houses where she worked in Dubai. Valuables worth thousands were recovered from her possession.
According to the Director of General Department of Criminal Investigation, Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, the woman used to spray some kind of sleep-inducing substance on children and the elderly and steal valuables.

The maid stole jewellery, watches, mobile phones and cash, he said.By using the sleep-inducing substance, she endangered the lives of people, he pointed out.

Al Mansouri told Khaleej Times that the maid was deported last year after she was caught committing similar crimes, but she had returned to the UAE on another passport.

The woman targeted families which advertised vacancies in newspapers for a nanny or housemaid.

To gain the confidence of the employers, she used to hand over a copy of her passport copy and plead for the job.

Al Mansouri said four months ago the CID had received complaints from many people alleging that their Sri Lankan maid had stolen valuables from their homes. After sustained surveillance, the maid was arrested from her abode in Dubai.

According to Major Mohammed Ahli, the maid chose her targets carefully and moved from one area to another. She had targeted families which had only (two kids.

Among the areas where she operated were Mirdiff, Rashidiya, Rifaa, Jumeirah and Oud Maitha.

Ahli cautioned residents against employing maids and helpers who were not under their sponsorship.

The housemaid was referred to Dubai Public Prosecution.
